Willamette Valley Country Club History and Founding

Willamette Valley Country Club (WVCC) is a private 18-hole golf course located in Canby, Oregon. The club was founded in 1961 by a group of local businessmen who were looking for a place to play golf outside of Portland. WVCC was designed by Shirley Stone, a renowned golf course architect who is known for her work on courses in the Pacific Northwest.

The course is situated on 220 acres of rolling farmland, with stunning views of the surrounding Willamette Valley. The front nine holes are relatively open and forgiving, while the back nine are more challenging, with tighter fairways and more water hazards. Founding

On August 2, 1961, a group of local businessmen met in the offices of Clifford S. Beckett in Oregon City to discuss the possibility of starting a country club in Canby. The men were Clarence Van Dorn, John Rasmussen, Clifford S. Beckett, and J. Wesley Lawyer. Rasmussen had secured a 60-day option on 220 acres of land owned by the Collins Lumber Company, known as “Lucky’s Pasture.” The purchase price was $235,000.

The men formed a committee to explore the feasibility of the project. The committee hired Shirley Stone, a golf course architect, to design a course for the club. Stone submitted her plans in early 1962, and the club’s board of directors approved them.

In May 1962, the club awarded the contract to build the course to Western Turf. The course was completed in October 1962, and the club opened its doors to members on November 1, 1962.

Architect

Shirley Stone was a golf course architect who designed a number of courses in the Pacific Northwest, including WVCC. Stone was known for her ability to create courses that were both beautiful and challenging. She was also a pioneer in the use of natural landscaping in her designs.

Stone was born in Portland, Oregon, in 1920. She began her career as a draftsman for the Portland Parks and Recreation Department. In 1947, she started her own golf course architecture firm. Stone designed over 30 courses in her career, including courses at Sunriver Resort, Alder Creek Golf Course, and Salishan Golf Course.

Stone was a member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA) and the Women’s Golf Course Architects Association (WGCAA). She was also a recipient of the ASGCA’s Distinguished Service Award.

Stone died in 2001 at the age of 81. She is remembered as one of the most influential golf course architects of her generation.
