Nestled just off the northwest corner of Columbus, Ohio, the Muirfield Village Golf Club is one of two popular courses in the Muirfield Village area of Dublin. Muirfield Village, an affluent and leafy community, has a strong historical connection to American golf legend Jack Nicklaus.

Though it was opened in 1974, the story of the course began some time before this. Nicklaus fell in love with the name ‘Muirfield’ when he won the 1966 Open at Muirfield, Scotland, the oldest golf club in the world still in operation. This experience inspired a dream to design a course that would be loved by every level of player, and name it after the historic Scottish venue.

The club’s own Memorial Tournament was established in the same year that the club opened, and is currently one of five tournaments that have been given invitational status by the PGA Tour. As an invitational tournament, it operates on a reduced field of 120 players, as opposed to the standard 156 used in most full-field opens. Outside of this tournament, the club has also hosted several other high-profile golf events, including the Ryder Cup, US Amateur, and the Presidents Cup.

After a strong start from its association with Nicklaus’s prestigious career, the club remains one of the most exclusive clubs in the state, and is frequented by many high-profile CEOs and celebrities, as well as athletes like Jason Day and several players on the Columbus Blue Jackets NHL team.

These days, Jack Nicklaus is known as a great course designer just as much as he’s known for the accolades of his professional career. Though he’s been retired for some time now and has managed the club for even longer, he still takes an active role in making sure the course is up to his exacting standards.

Once a year in the fall, Nicklaus makes changes to the design of the course, implementing new technology, adding new challenges to the standard of professional play, and generally working to make games more enjoyable for all members. Recent changes include lengthening certain holes and rerouting a stream on the course. Nicklaus has also been known to have an active hand in periodical changes to the driving range and the club house’s interiors.

The club’s membership tends to be concentrated around Columbus and the surrounding area, but there are still members who are based in various regions of the US and abroad.

Muirfield Village Golf Club Amenities

A private, non-equity golf club with a history characterized by wealth and prestige, the golf at Muirfield Village is something any player will remember.

The 18-hole course, which is full of large bunkers and greens that require careful planning before a stroke, takes up most of the 220-acre facility. Aside from the course itself, the club also maintains a huge pro shop, an 11-acre driving range, chipping area, and putting green. One-on-one pro lessons and club rental is also available for members and their guests.

Though primarily a golf facility for golf nuts, the club also offers a small suite of comforts for their members, including an upscale restaurant, bar, and snack bar on site.

The club also has a partnership with the nearby Country Club at Muirfield. Though not part of the Muirfield Village club, members are still welcome to use the Country Club’s great amenities. These include a large leisure pool with two diving boards, an outdoor pool bar, seven tennis courts, four pickleball courts, and a modern fitness center. This sister club also hosts weddings and private events for members and non-members alike.

Muirfield Village Golf Club Membership Cost

Like most country clubs with its level of prestige, Muirfield Village doesn’t publicly disclose information about its joining fees. However, based on quotes from the club that have been issued in recent years, the club is rumored to have initiation fees of $100,000, and monthly dues of around $400-$500. There’s a further food and beverage minimum for members, amounting to $800 a year. This places it among the most expensive clubs in the US, with initiation fees for comparable clubs averaging at around $50,000.

Non-members can only play when attending with full members, and club maintains a weekend green fee of $200.

Muirfield Village Golf Club Visitors Guide and Dress Code

Muirfield Village Gold Club maintains a dress code that’s fairly typical of upscale golf and country clubs. Collared shirts and bermuda shorts are required when on the club premises, and no denim is permitted. Metal spikes, however, are allowed, which many players will see as an added convenience compared to other prestigious clubs.
